The Benefits of Zirconium Oxide

One of the challenges patients face when restorative care is needed is choosing materials for prosthetic devices. It is difficult to know which materials are the safest and provide the most longevity. At Brentwood Family Dental, we have found an ideal material to use for restorations with dental crowns: Zirconium. Not only is this material aesthetically pleasing, it has a wide variety of benefits such as:

  • Biocompatibility – surrounding tissues will not experience irritation from the restoration

  • Strength – will withstand the intense pressure of chewing, making it ideal for molars

  • Non-metallic – suitable for restorations on front teeth as well as molars

  • Corrosion resistance

  • Translucency

  • Precision – providing a fit that is equivalent to gold crowns

  • Consistency – Unlike many other materials, Zirconium does not change during the creation process. Density, purity, translucency, and fit are completely unaffected by the different aspects of production.

Using Zirconium, a type of ultra-strong ceramic, instead of metal-based crowns, we are able to provide patients with excellent, long lasting restorations without the instance of metal allergy or tissue irritation. Aesthetically, this type of crown is far superior for a few reasons. Metal crowns are dense and grey or gold in color, and therefore let in no light whatsoever. Without the passage of light through even porcelain overlays, there is no translucency. The result is that the restored tooth does not match the appearance of natural teeth. Until recently, the all-porcelain crown offered the best alternative for aesthetics, but it lacks the strength needed for a crown to last as long as possible. With Zirconium, patients get the best of both aesthetic appearance and strength.

Receiving a restoration with a dental crown is simple and effective using Zirconium. When teeth are fitted with a crown, all decay or damage is removed and any pain that had been present subsequently disappears. Through a natural-looking dental crown, you can regain strength, aesthetics, and confidence in your smile.

The way we feel about our smile is important, as it either fosters or inhibits the confidence with which we interact with those in our personal and professional lives. Contact Brentwood Family Dental to see how Zirconium dental crowns can meet your needs.
