Dental Implants Treatment

If you are missing teeth, there is a positive aspect. Now, more than ever, there are options for beautiful restorations that look and function like your natural teeth. In the past, dentures or bridges were the only options to replace missing teeth. While these restorations are still available today, dental technology has paved the way for a more secure and permanent solution. Dental implants are a restoration that integrate with the jawbone and do not rely on denture adhesive or the support of neighboring teeth.
In recent years, dental implants have increased in popularity. Alternatives such as dentures sit on top of the gums. This means that there is potential for them to move or even slip out while you are eating or speaking. Dental implants are secure in the jaw, so there is no risk of movement.
The dental implant treatment process takes place in multiple appointments over the course of several months. Before treatment begins, you will come in for a consultation to assess your candidacy for implants. Patients must have a mouth that is in good health (free of decay or gum disease) and the bone structure must be intact. If you have bone resorption, you may be able to have a bone graft to have sufficient structure to support the implant.
The process of placing the implant takes place in the office. Once in place, the tissue will be pulled over top of it to help with healing. Over the next few months, the bone will fuse around the implant, keeping it secure in place.
Once the healing process is complete, the final step is attaching the abutment (the connector) and the final restoration. Dental implants can be finished with a dental crown, bridge, or denture, depending on how many teeth are missing.
Once the entire process is complete, you can expect to speak, bite, and chew just like you did with your natural teeth. With proper oral hygiene, dental implants can last a lifetime.
