An interview with the man himself – Dr. Alkhoury tells all!

Dr. Jamal Alkhoury talks about his journey of becoming a dentist who not only fixed dental solutions but personally designed smiles and inculcated aesthetic design in his work to give people the look they wanted. From undergoing several board examination to fine tune his knowledge and skills on dealing with craniofacial pain, Dr. Alkhoury finds deep satisfaction in enabling patients regain their jaw function and enjoy a stress-free painless life.
Transcript I started off as a dentist – opened up practice in 1999 in a really nice small community and I was doing really great.

My interest was cosmetic as I got the artistic skills and I am always passionate about making people look good and having a great smile and then I went into cases – big cases where I was doing full mouth reconstruction – there was something there that was missing.

I get patients that would point out to certain areas in their mouth, when we look at the x-ray and conclude the examination they don’t support the symptom of the complaint. I realized there was sometimes bigger than what we were dealing with and I probably need to investigate more and learn more.

So I went to conferences and ran into nice thoughtful people and that opened the door for me to learn more about something called craniofacial pain, sleep disorder and the connection between both of them.

So I decided to apply to craniofacial pain, sleep medicine, took courses and went back to school and learned more took my fellowship and went through all the steps, exams oral exams, hands on and then took the board exam written and oral and I passed it – so I have got dual boards in sleep and pain.

It felt good being able to help pain patients it was something very psychologically rewarding because it is nice to help others.

Then I realized to complete that picture reposture the jaw, align the jaw, the teeth I had to know more than I do although I had 3 boards already.

So I went back and also did a residency program for 3 years and I got a diploma in clinical orthopedic and now I have the full circle altogether, all the connection I have them at my disposal.

SO now I look at the patient from a different perspective.

I look at the problem not from just a dental, a tooth, an oral point of view but more like a patient’s total, and that is what is missing in dental school where they teach about teeth and inside the mouth never outside of it.

So fortunately where I am now, I have the opportunity to provide the knowledge and the education to my patients so that they can make a better decision in choosing the right treatment.
He pursues continuing education with an insatiable thirst for knowledge. In 2013 Dr. Alkhoury completed rigorous study and testing requirements to earn Fellowship in the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain (AACP) and Fellowship in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID).
