Brentwood area dentist describes different types of dental crowns
By Dr. Jamil Alkhoury
Why porcelain dental crowns?
While there are crowns made of materials such as metals and golds,
porcelain dental crowns are the types of crowns most commonly
recommended.
This is because these crowns are not only strong but match the existing
teeth—making the dental crowns practically indistinguishable from the
natural teeth. This is important to many of our patients who don't want
their restorations to look noticeable to others.
What are dental crowns for?
There are many situations when patients may benefit from the
placement of a dental crown.
- Crowns are used to cover teeth that have extremely large fillings in place, which affect the strength of the remaining structure.
- Crowns can be placed over the abutment of a dental implant to give the appearance of a natural tooth when teeth are lost or extracted.
- Crowns cover teeth that may be permanently stained or broken.
- Crowns can be bonded to false teeth called pontics to fabricate a dental bridge for the replacement of one or more teeth in a row within the dental arch.
- Crowns are placed over teeth that are chipped or cracked, providing an extra layer of strength and protection.
