Replace Your Missing Teeth with Reliable and Beautiful Dental Bridges
By Dr. Jamil Alkhoury
What are the different types of bridges?
Dental bridges come in several shapes and sizes. The common types of dental bridges include:
Unsure which type of dental bridge is right for you? Our Brentwood dentist will walk you through the options, explaining the pros and cons of each, and help you choose the best solution.
- Traditional bridge: It's ideal for patients with natural teeth on either side of the gap. The custom bridge fits the gap and is supported by dental crowns on the surrounding support teeth.
- Cantilever bridge: It's used when there's only one adjacent tooth to support the bridge.
- Maryland bridge: Instead of crowns, this bridge is anchored by a porcelain or metal framework secured to the back of nearby teeth. It's less invasive but also less durable and stable.
- Implant bridge: Traditional bridges rely on support from natural teeth, but implant bridges are anchored in the jawbone with titanium implants. They are more stable than their traditional counterparts and can replace up to four or more missing teeth.

How is a dental bridge placed?
We can complete placing a dental bridge within two appointments. First, the teeth on either side
of the gap—called abutment teeth—are gently reshaped to create space for crown placement.
Next, we'll take precise impressions to custom-design a bridge that fits perfectly and looks natural. While our lab fabricates your permanent bridge, a temporary one is placed to protect your smile. Once ready, Dr. Alkhoury securely bonds the permanent bridge, restoring your ability to chew, speak, and smile confidently.

Can I remove my bridge?
No! Unlike conventional dentures, dental bridges are fixed. Once bonded to your teeth with strong
dental cement, they stay put, offering stability you can count on with every bite and smile.
Only a dental professional can take them out, and this exposes the reshaped teeth that were modified to hold the bridge. If having the flexibility to remove your tooth replacement is a priority, a removable partial denture might be a good fit for your lifestyle and preferences.

Can bridges decay?
Our dental bridges are created from non-corrosive materials, so they can't decay. However, harmful
bacteria can sneak under the bridge and attack the underlying teeth, compromising the stability of
your restoration.
Observe the following to keep your restoration healthy and strong.
- Good oral hygiene : Brush your teeth at least twice daily, and don't forget to floss. Diligent oral hygiene eliminates plaque and harmful bacteria.
- Watch out for your diet : Stick to a dental-friendly diet. Keep your mouth hydrated and limit the intake of sugary foods.
- Routine check-ups : Visit your Brentwood dentist every six months for regular cleanings and check-ups. These routine visits detect and treat oral issues before they advance.
- Avoid non-food items : Only use your teeth to chew or bite food. Using your teeth to cut fingernails, open bottles, or crush candies can damage or dislodge your bridge.
