Well-known dentist in Brentwood, CA explains the benefits of LANAP® Laser Treatment

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults ages 65 and older. Therefore, it is critical to seek treatment when you notice signs of gum disease. These signs include tender or swollen gums as well as gums that bleed when brushing or flossing. Fortunately, gum disease can be reversed when it is detected in its earliest stage. However, as it progresses to periodontitis and more advanced stages, treatment may be required to save the teeth. Although it was more difficult to save the teeth with traditional gum surgery, laser treatment has the ability to save the teeth and reduce the chance of infection. Dr. Jamil Alkhoury, a respected dentist, provides LANAP® Laser Treatment at Brentwood Family Dental in Brentwood, CA. We are happy to explain what can be expected before, during, and after the procedure.

Before treatment

The first step toward a healthier smile is scheduling a consultation with Dr. Alkhoury. He will examine your mouth, teeth, and gums. Next, there will be x-rays taken to examine the health of the jawbone, tooth roots, and gum tissue. If you are a candidate for treatment, Dr. Alkhoury will explain how the laser works and may provide a demonstration. He will tailor a treatment plan to meet your needs.

During Treatment

LANAP® treatment is generally more comfortable than conventional gum surgery and is for those who suffer from the advanced stages of gum disease. To ensure the utmost comfort, the treatment area will be numbed with local anesthesia. Then, Dr. Alkhoury uses a perio probe to determine the depth of the pocket between the teeth and bone tissue. A laser light is used to remove the bacteria and diseased tissue. The root surface tartar is removed with an ultrasonic scaler and special instruments. Dr. Alkhoury uses the laser to finish cleaning the pocket, which aids in sealing the pocket so new germs cannot enter. The bite trauma is adjusted. Eventually, the body heals naturally so the gum pockets improve and the teeth become more stable.

After treatment

Dr. Alkhoury and our team will provide aftercare instructions to ensure optimal healing and recovery. In comparison to traditional gum surgery, there is minimal downtime. Often, patients can return to work or resume normal activity the day following treatment.
