Brentwood, CA area patients ask, is cosmetic dentistry worth it?

Dental Implants Permanent

Dr. Jamil Alkhoury and the team of Brentwood Family Dental in Brentwood, CA is here to help patients with a wide selection of treatments, including cosmetic dentistry. But many patients want to know: is cosmetic dentistry worth it?

Cosmetic dentistry

The idea behind cosmetic dentistry is to address imperfections of the smile that affect appearance. This means that when problems arise such as stained, or misaligned teeth, a procedure can be used as a remedy. Our team of professionals provide a wide range of cosmetic procedures that are affordable and worth it for many of our patients who have struggled with imperfections for years, sometimes even a lifetime!

Procedures available

At Brentwood Family Dental, we can assess a patient’s smile and speak with them about the most appropriate cosmetic dentistry procedures available for them. They may include:

  • Porcelain veneers – when imperfections affect the teeth near the front of the mouth, called the anterior teeth, they can be disguised with the use of porcelain veneers. Veneers are thin cosmetic restorations bonded over the tooth like a facing to provide enhancement.
  • Teeth whitening – patients who desire a brighter, more beautiful smile are encouraged to ask us about professional-grade teeth whitening choices. Our team of professionals proudly offer in-office solutions to add brilliance to the natural teeth without sensitivity like over-the-counter products often cause.
  • Dentures – missing teeth can be replaced with dentures for function and beauty. We offer two varieties – full dentures and partial dentures. Partial dentures are used by Brentwood, California area patients to replace one or more teeth within the arch, while full are for an entire arch replacement.
  • Dental implants – patients may also want to consider dental implants for tooth replacement. These permanent restorations are highly desirable for patients who want a no-fuss way to address missing teeth.

Whether patients are seeking preventative care or extensive dental work, our team can help. Patients with tooth loss are welcome to ask our staff about the benefits of dental implants to complete their smile when tooth loss occurs—while providing a permanent solution.

What are dental implants?

Dr. Jamil Alkhoury describes dental implants as tooth root replacements made of a biocompatible material call titanium metal. An implant looks like a small screw that is placed during oral surgery into the bone of the jaw, providing a foundation for a dental crown, bridge, or denture. Dental implants are incredibly versatile and can be used in many situations.

Who is a candidate?

Determining candidacy is done during an evaluation with Dr. Jamil Alkhoury. X-rays are taken to see if there is sufficient bone structure to successfully place an implant into the bone. This ensures the process of osseointegration occurs, where the natural bone wraps around the restoration and holds it firmly in place. Patients who are not candidates for dental implants are better suited for alternatives such a dental bridges or dentures.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants can complete the smile when teeth are loss. They are:

  • Permanent

Why patients may consider veneers for their teeth

young woman hugging middle aged mother

Porcelain veneers for teeth are just one of several cosmetic dentistry options available at Brentwood Family Dental. Our team is here to help patients choose the solutions best for their smile, and when imperfections are detracting from an otherwise beautiful look, porcelain veneers are a viable option for many of our patients!

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are custom-made ceramic facings that are created specifically for a patient to bond over the front of an anterior tooth to cover an imperfection. Veneers are used for teeth that are:

  • Permanently stained
  • Misaligned
  • Broken
  • Spaced
  • Unusually shaped

Why choose porcelain veneers?

While there are several cosmetic dentistry solutions available to our patients, there are none like the ease of porcelain veneers. Veneers are completed from start to finish within weeks, and provide patients with a corrective option that can last a decade or longer. It starts with the preparation of the tooth. The front enamel may be filed down before impressions are made for fabrication of the new restoration. The impressions are mailed to a laboratory to a ceramist for creation and mailed back to the dental office within two weeks. Patients come back into the office for a placement appointment, during which the new veneers are bonded onto the natural tooth. Patients leave with a brand new look! Veneers are made to match the shape, size, and color of the existing teeth in the smile for seamless integration.

Dr. Jamil Alkhoury of Brentwood Family Dental is dedicated to helping patients with aesthetic options available at an affordable price. Problems with the teeth near the front of the mouth may result in patients learning more about solutions such as porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers described

Porcelain veneers are restorations that are made of a thin layer of ceramic to bond over the front of a tooth to change its appearance. This is perfect for patients who have imperfections on the anterior teeth. Veneers can address teeth that are:

  • Broken
  • Chipped
  • Spaced
  • Misaligned
  • Unusually shaped

Porcelain veneers provide a fast, safe, and affordable way to address problem areas and improve the overall look of a smile with minimal care and attention.

How are porcelain veneers made and placed?

The first step in moving forward with porcelain veneers is determining candidacy. Most patients are candidates for veneers if they have a healthy smile free from untreated cavities and periodontal disease. This is determined during an initial evaluation. Once patients decide to have veneers placed, preparations are made. This may require the removal of a thin portion of enamel from the front surfaces of the teeth being covered. Impressions are taken and sent to a dental laboratory for creation of the veneers, and are sent to the dental office for bonding within a few weeks. Porcelain veneers last approximately ten years or longer with proper maintenance habits.

Brentwood and Walnut Creek, California smile beautifully with porcelain veneers

dental porcelain veneers

Brentwood Family Dental, near Walnut Creek, California, is excited to offer a wide range of cosmetic procedures for patients. Those who are interested in enhancing their smile will enjoy choosing one—or several—of our aesthetic solutions. Patients unhappy with the appearance of their anterior teeth may consider the advantages of treatments such as porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers explained

Dr. Jamil Alkhoury of Brentwood Family Dental describes porcelain veneers as thin facings that are bonded over the front of teeth to completely change their appearance. Porcelain veneers have become incredibly popular as patients see how natural and beautiful they look. There are several benefits to using porcelain veneers when compared to alternative treatments. For example, porcelain veneers are:

  • Beautiful
  • Durable
  • Easy to care for
  • Natural-looking

Veneers are made after the natural tooth is prepared. This may require the removal of a thin portion of enamel from the front of the tooth. After this has been done, the dentist takes impressions of the front of the tooth and then sends these to a dental laboratory for the fabrication of the new restorations. Porcelain veneers are then bonded onto the tooth once completed for a dramatic improvement.

Veneers are versatile and can be used in many situations. Veneers can bond over teeth that are fractured or chipped, restoring appearance. They are used to cover teeth that are misaligned or gapped. Some patients use veneers to cover teeth with permanent staining that does not respond to traditional bleaching.

Sleep apnea treatment available through Brentwood and Oakley, California area dental practice

Snoring husband

Dr. Jamil Alkhoury of Brentwood Family Dental in California offers patients in and around the area of Oakley, CA solutions for sleeping disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea. Treatment of this condition is often addressed using a CPAP machine as suggested by a physician. However, many patients fail to comply with treatment because the device is noisy, uncomfortable, and difficult to travel with. This leaves many patients untreated for obstructive sleep apnea, increasing the risk of several medical concerns. Instead, the team of Brentwood Family Dental may suggest the use of oral appliance therapy as an alternative.

Oral appliance therapy

Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, is caused by a blocked airway. This may be the result of the tongue falling back into the throat or soft tissue pushing the throat closed while a patient tries to sleep at night. The result? Patients wake up hundreds of times a night, unable to achieve the deep, restorative sleep they need. Because of this, many patients experience symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and daytime fatigue that can make it difficult to concentrate. Oral appliance therapy works differently from a CPAP machine. A special mouth guard is made specifically for the patient and is worn in the mouth during the night to keep the airway open.

 Advantages of oral appliance therapy

There are several benefits to oral appliance therapy:

• Comfortable
• Easy to use
• Portable
• Simple to clean

Schedule an appointment today!

Call (925) 344-5296 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Jamil Alkhoury and speak to him about the alternatives to CPAP therapy for obstructive sleep apnea. Patients are more likely to comply with oral appliance therapy than with the use of a CPAP machine. We encourage patients to learn about the options available to them and choose one that fits their needs and lifestyle.

Brentwood CA family dentist can help ease the chronic jaw pain you have with TMJ disorder therapy

TMJ Disorder Therapy - Article Image

Pain and tenderness in your jaw, pain in and around your ear, difficulty chewing, your jaw locking, making it hard to open or close your mouth. Do any of these symptoms sound like you? If so, it’s possible you suffer from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. Dr. Alkhoury, of Brentwood Family offers TMJ disorder therapy.

If you experience any of the symptoms listed above, we encourage you to see us.

Diagnosing TMJ:

  • During an initial consultation, Dr. Alkhoury would listen to and feel your jaw while you open and close your mouth. He also observes the range of motion of your jaw and determines the areas around your jaw where pain is localized. This helps him determine the best treatment options.
  • We also use JVA (jaw vibration analysis) as well as CBCT (cat-scan) to aid in a TMJ diagnosis.

Treating your TMJ:

  • We have an occlusal appliance (mouth guard) created exclusively in our office that we will prescribe. Often, wearing one of these devices over your teeth will help ease the TMJ pain and help keep your symptoms in check.
  • Physical therapy: We often find that laser therapy, cold and heat treatment and exercises that stretch and strengthen your jaw muscles can alleviate pain and symptoms.
  •  Pain relievers, ointments, and anti-inflammatories: Sometimes, if symptoms are mild enough, over the counter anti-inflammatory medication can alleviate symptoms. Also, Dr. Alkhoury has designed a compound therapeutic ointment that will also help the pain and discomfort associated with TMJ.

Don’t let another day go by in pain. If you are in the Brentwood/Walnut Creek area, call Brentwood Family Dental at (925) 344-5296 to schedule a TMJ consultation. We are committed to giving patient the highest level of care with our priorities being comfort and quality of life. Let us help you live a pain free life!

Common Symptoms of Tooth Decay

tooth decay symptoms brentwood tooth pain Tooth decay is a serious issue that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. If left untreated, the decay can become more damaging to the structure of the tooth. Dr. Jamil Alkhoury and the team of Brentwood Family Dental encourage patients to know the common symptoms of tooth decay to detect it early for conservative treatment.

When decay reaches the dental pulp, which houses the nerves and blood supply, it causes pain and sensitivity. However, some patients are not even aware they have cavities as they are too small for them to notice. These are often found during a physical evaluation at the dental office during six month appointments for cleanings and examinations.

Treatment of tooth decay is often done in the form of fillings. Fillings can keep the decay from getting larger and help seal the tooth to keep bacteria from getting inside. Larger cavities may require a treatment known as root canal therapy to remove the dental pulp and restore the health of the smile.
