Root canal is a treatment normally indicated for teeth which have serious decay – so grave that it has invaded the pulp chamber where the nerve and the blood vessels reside. That tooth, which otherwise would likely require extraction, may be saved using an endodontic treatment (a root canal).
Once you've developed a dental infection, the decay has traveled deep enough to attack the nerve. The nerve has become irritated, resulting in pain. You have a tooth ache. And you have a problem.
Decay means bacteria, and bacteria within your tooth means bacteria in your body. Your tooth has reacted with pain, telling you that you must seek treatment. The trained professionals at
Brentwood Family Dental are ready to provide the care you need.
We begin with a thorough examination, including x-rays of the decayed tooth. During a consultation with the patient we explain what happens when the decay travels to the pulp chamber. And we discuss the root canal procedure – just what
Dr. Alkhoury will do to get you out of pain and fight off that infection.
The process starts with purging contamination within the pulp chamber. We clean the decay and make sure that the remaining tooth structure is sufficient to hold the restoration. The tooth is filled with endodontic material, and then we seal it.
The root canal is normally completed in two office visits, with minimal discomfort due to our state-of-the-art techniques and equipment.
At Brentwood Family Dental, we strive to provide the very best treatment to each patient with minimum out-of-pocket expense. Most insurance companies cover the cost of a root canal. But, if your policy contains a waiting period it should be clearly specified. Our financial staff can expertly guide you in understanding how your insurance benefits apply, and other payment options that may be available, such as a customized payment plan.
Root Canal FAQs
How do I know if I need a root canal?
If you have persistent tooth discomfort, especially when chewing or putting pressure to the tooth, you could require a root canal. Other signs include prolonged sensitivity to extended periods where your teeth are sensitive to hot or cold (or both) temperatures, discoloration of the tooth, or swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums. If left untreated, an infected tooth can lead to further complications, including abscesses. Dr. Alkhoury will examine your tooth and may take X-rays to determine if a root canal is necessary. If you have symptoms, schedule an appointment promptly to prevent further damage.
Will a root canal be painful?
The procedure is usually not painful because Dr. Alkhoury will use a local anesthetic to numb the area before starting the treatment. Most patients report feeling little to no discomfort during the procedure. Afterward, you may experience mild soreness or tenderness, which should subside within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers can manage this discomfort. Dr. Alkhoury provides detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery. If pain persists, contact Dr. Alkhoury.
How long does a root canal take?
A root canal typically lasts sixty to ninety minutes but varies by tooth and complexity. On average, a root canal typically takes between sixty to ninety minutes. The method may be quicker for front teeth, while molars may take longer due to their more complex root structures. Dr. Alkhoury will assess your needs and estimate your time before the procedure. After your root canal, you may need a follow-up visit to place a crown or filling to restore the tooth.
How long will my tooth last after a root canal?
With proper care, a root canal-treated tooth can last years, even a lifetime. Dr. Alkhoury may recommend a crown for added protection. Crowns help preserve the structure of the tooth and prevent further damage. Maintaining oral hygiene and regular checkups will help keep the tooth functional. A root canal can sometimes last a lifetime with proper care.
Is it possible for a root canal to fail?
Root canal failure can occur if infection remains or new issues arise. Untreated cracks or delays can contribute to failure. If symptoms persist, Dr. Alkhoury may recommend retreatment or an apicoectomy (removal of the root tip). Regular follow-up visits will help Dr. Alkhoury monitor the healing process and ensure the success of your root canal.
Can a root canal save a severely damaged tooth?
A root canal can often save a cracked or decayed tooth by removing infection and preserving the structure. Dr. Alkhoury will carefully assess the extent of the damage and determine whether a root canal is the best option. If we can't save the tooth, Dr. Alkhoury will discuss alternatives with you, including extraction and replacement options to restore your smile and oral function.
Can I still get a root canal if I'm pregnant?
Root canals are generally safe during pregnancy, especially for pain relief and infection control. Dr. Alkhoury works with your obstetrician to ensure safety. If non-urgent, treatment may be postponed until after delivery. Pain management will be carefully considered for minimal risk to you and your baby.
