Teeth Whitening
Staining from tobacco, coffee, tea, and red wine; discoloration from certain medications; and simply the passage of time can diminish the youthful look of your teeth. If you aren't satisfied with a dingy smile, we can help.
At
Brentwood Family Dental we offer several treatment options to whiten and lighten your teeth; to restore their bright color and luster.
These are actual patients treated by Dr. Jamil Alkhoury - "Before" and "after" results may not occur for all patients.
If you'd prefer to whiten your teeth in the privacy of your own home, and don't require overnight results, we recommend the Take Home system. We prepare custom trays from impressions of your own teeth. Whenever it's convenient for you, you place a clinical bleaching solution in the trays and wear them for an hour at a time. The Take Home method gives you the opportunity to whiten your teeth as often as you want and for as long as you want, to keep that smile dazzling.
But suppose you need a whiter smile right away – perhaps to look terrific for an important meeting, wedding, or class reunion. Our in-office Zoom whitening process is perfect! In one visit, in about an hour, you'll have noticeably whiter teeth. In most cases you can expect to leave with teeth four shades lighter.
In rare situations a patient may not be able to tolerate wearing the trays at home. Again, Zoom can be their solution to teeth whitening.
Some patients experience sensitivity from either an at-home or in-office whitening procedure. Rest assured that this discomfort is minor and usually passes within two days. If you notice this sensation just after whitening, you may want to limit very hot and very cold foods briefly. And please contact our office if it persists – it could be a condition unrelated to tooth whitening that needs dental attention.

Teeth Whitening FAQs
How long will the results of teeth whitening last?
Teeth whitening results can vary depending on your oral habits. Typically, the results last anywhere from six months to two years. Regular brushing, avoiding staining foods like coffee or wine, and using a whitening toothpaste can help extend the brightness. Dr. Alkhoury may recommend touch-up treatments every six months to keep your smile radiant. It's important to maintain good oral hygiene and visit Dr. Alkhoury regularly for professional cleanings to ensure the longevity of your whitening results.
Are teeth whitening safe for everyone?
Teeth whitening is generally safe for most patients but may not be suitable for individuals with certain conditions. If you have gum disease, damaged enamel, or sensitive teeth, Dr. Alkhoury might suggest a more careful approach or alternate therapies. It's important to consult with Dr. Alkhoury before undergoing teeth whitening to ensure it's right for you. Teeth whitening may aggravate existing dental issues in some cases, so a comprehensive dental exam is essential before beginning treatment.
Will teeth whitening damage my enamel?
When done correctly, teeth whitening does not damage enamel. Professional whitening treatments administered by Dr. Alkhoury are designed to protect your tooth enamel while brightening your smile. Over-the-counter whitening products can sometimes be too abrasive or harsh, leading to enamel wear. Dr. Alkhoury uses clinically approved whitening agents that safely break down stains without compromising the strength of your teeth.
Can I whiten my teeth if I have dental work, such as fillings or crowns?
Teeth whitening treatments, such as fillings, crowns, or veneers, will not lighten dental work. This means that if you have restorations, they may remain the same color while your natural teeth brighten. If you're considering whitening your smile, discussing your options with Dr. Alkhoury first is a good idea. In some cases, if you're undergoing significant dental restoration work, Dr. Alkhoury may recommend whitening your natural teeth before having new crowns or fillings placed to ensure uniform results.
How soon can I see results after a whitening treatment?
Depending on Dr. Alkhoury's method, you can typically see results immediately after a single professional whitening session. In-office treatments often offer dramatic results, with teeth becoming several shades lighter in just one appointment. It may take a few days to see noticeable changes for at-home treatments, but with consistent use of the prescribed whitening trays or gel, you should see gradual improvement.
Will my teeth become sensitive after whitening?
Some patients experience mild sensitivity during or after teeth whitening, but it's usually temporary. Dr. Alkhoury may recommend desensitizing toothpaste before or after the procedure to minimize discomfort. If you have sensitive teeth, Dr. Alkhoury can tailor a whitening plan to suit your needs, using gentler products to reduce the risk of irritation. It's important to report any prolonged discomfort to Dr. Alkhoury so that he can adjust the treatment or offer additional care to ensure your comfort throughout the process.
Can I whiten my teeth if I have stains caused by medication or genetics?
Teeth stains caused by certain medications or genetics can be more resistant to whitening treatments. If your teeth have intrinsic stains-those deep inside the tooth structure-Dr. Alkhoury may suggest alternative treatments, such as professional bonding, veneers, or other cosmetic procedures, to help achieve the desired results.
