Pediatrics and Orthodontics
Pediatric dentistry involves dental care for children from infancy through adolescence. It focuses on hygiene, prevention, and treatment methods unique to a growing mouth. But pediatric dentistry also requires patience and elements of child psychology to ensure that your youngster has good experiences in the dental chair – in a pleasant environment of teaching and communication.
Prevention of tooth decay is, of course, a primary concern with a young mouth. This and other unaddressed dental problems can have a negative impact on language development, and school and sports performance, resulting in low self-esteem. In addition to good oral hygiene, we emphasize healthy eating habits.
These are actual patients treated by Dr. Jamil Alkhoury - "Before" and "after" results may not occur for all patients.
Our role changes once your child's permanent teeth have erupted. During his or her adolescence, we continue to stress nutrition and prevention, and we become even more sensitive to concerns the child may have about self-image. This is a great opportunity to reinforce good lifestyle choices regarding tobacco, alcohol, and drug use.
We'll also begin to consider orthodontics at teenage, if appropriate. We have an in-house orthodontist to treat irregularities in tooth alignment. Using a variety of appliances, including traditional metal braces, we can correct bite and appearance problems associated with crooked teeth, giving your child confidence for life.
Invisalign is another orthodontic option for adolescents and for adults – so long as permanent teeth are in place. While not suitable for major adjustments, Invisalign is convenient and unobtrusive. Teeth are straightened in eight to 15 months. There are no metal braces in the mouth. The removable, clear appliances (called correction trays or aligners) allow eating, talking, and unrestricted oral hygiene (even flossing).

When should I schedule my child's first visit to the dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your child visit the dentist within six months of their first tooth appearing or by their first birthday, whichever comes sooner. After the first visit, your child should visit us every six months. It may seem overkill, but these visits allow us to closely monitor your child's oral development and catch any potential issues early before they become more serious.
What happens during my child's first dental visit?
It's natural for you and your child to be nervous about the first dental visit, but we assure you it's quick and comfortable. Our primary goal is to get to know your child and help them feel at ease in our office. During the visit, the dentist will perform a gentle, painless exam to check your child's teeth, bite, and jaws for any issues. We'll answer any concerns you may have about your child's oral health, including teeth eruption, thumb sucking, bottle feeding, etc.
What pediatric services do we offer?
Your child's dental care includes at-home oral hygiene and professional dental care. At home, we expect parents/caregivers to maintain their child's oral health by flossing, brushing, and providing good nutrition.
On our part, we nurture your child's smile with the following services:
- Dental check-ups: Regular dental screenings allow us to detect and treat oral issues at their earliest, treatable stages.
- Dental cleanings: We professionally clean your child's teeth to eliminate plaque and tartar from hard-to-reach areas.
- Dental sealants: We help children fight cavities by applying protective dental sealants to decay-prone teeth.
- Dental X-rays: When your child is of appropriate age, we use dental X-rays to unearth hidden and developmental issues.
- Orthodontics: We offer ortho screenings and treatments to keep your child's teeth and bite healthy and beautiful.
Why does pediatric dentistry matter?
Children's dentistry ensures your child's teeth and gums develop properly from a young age, preventing long-term dental issues. Regular dental visits help establish healthy habits, reduce the risk of cavities, and catch potential problems early. Additionally, specialized care from a pediatric dentist creates a positive experience, helping children feel comfortable and confident about dental care throughout their lives.
Do pediatric dentists only cater to infants?
Our pediatric dental office provides comprehensive care for your child from infancy through their teenage years. Starting with their first tooth, we guide your child's oral health journey, ensuring proper development. As they grow, we tailor our treatments to their needs at each stage—from teething and early cavity prevention to orthodontic guidance and routine cleanings. We aim to support your child's dental health throughout their childhood, helping them develop healthy habits that last a lifetime.
